Schenker Arkas revives trade on the Silk Road
Schenker's China Road Show informative meeting was held in Istanbul on April 10th, 2006. The Silk Road was the theme for this event, which was put on by Schenker Arkas, a joint venture between Schenker Stinnes Logistics and Arkas which has been serving the Turkish market with international logistics services since 1995. The speakers at the meeting were Jürgen Kern, Schenker Arkas Chairman of the Board of Directors, Torben Kock, Hong Kong Regional Sales and Marketing General Manager, and Gary Leung, Shenzhen Maritime Commerce General Manager.
In the opening speech, Jürgen Kern reminded listeners that the Silk Road connected the east with the west and that now sea, air and rail transport makes distant places like China much closer. Kern pointed out the importance of the Euro-Caucasian and Central Asian railways, stating that close monitoring of China's development is important.
The Chinese market will continue to grow
Torben Kock, Hong Kong Regional Sales and Marketing General Manager, described logistic services to China that are offered, pointing out that Schenker has been operating in China since 1968. He said, "We at Schenker are reaping the benefits of being on the ground for many years in an influential economy that is developing as fast as China. China is now the third largest commercial player in the world with 752 billion dollars of exports and 632 billion dollars of imports. We hope that Turkey can increase its foreign trade volume to China in the future and enter the top ten." Kock stated that South China is developing rapidly and that 420 million dollars was set aside to develop infrastructure in 2005. "This means that it will be easier for all countries including Turkey to carry out trade with China," he said. Speaking after Kock, Gary Leung stated that customer needs are being met by a full range of integrated logistics services, including warehousing, transport and labeling.
